The thing that I am the most struck and encouraged by as I transition into tech, is the community. People from all corners of tech and data analytics have welcomed me in. I recently decided that I really need to level up my viz skills, and so I worked on finding data I could visualize. I settled on data about the wage gap in America.
Since I had just made a viz about Ukraine, I did feel like I had a mental roadmap to help me. After looking over the data in R (that is where I happened to get the dataset), I had a rough draft in my brain of the vizzes I wanted to make, and how they would articulate into a data story.
After a solid afternoon or a bit more of work I had built multiple sheets, several dashboards, and brought them all together into an appealing story. I was quite pleased with the outcome of everything- I had an especially fun but hard time creating a heat map for the first time. Here are some samples:
However, I still felt like I had done a great job for a beginner/intermediate level user of Tableau. So, I went onto the Discord channel which I built, and found someone who I knew is a Tableau wizard. I asked her to please look over my work and really help me dive into what I could do better to level up my skills.
Much to my surprise, she sent me back a 6-8 page document! It had screenshots, suggestions, a list of things I had done well, and details about how to accomplish some of the trickier suggestions. She had even attached a new workbook with examples, and sent a YouTube video on how to do the hardest skill (but coolest). I was totally floored- not only at her being so generous, but how cool her suggestions were!
After a good amount of tweaking and thinking and Googling on my part, I had incorporated all of her suggestions but with my own twist in a way that worked for me. I cannot tell you how pleased I am with the results.
Pretty cool stuff, right?
